On-Plant Veterinary Officer (OPV)
OPV’s perform inspection and verification activities in export registered abattoirs across Australia. They are responsible for ensuring processors meet their obligation to comply with relevant export legislation particularly as it applies to food safety, product integrity, animal welfare and the specific requirements of importing countries. OPV’s often manage a small team of departmental staff performing inspections at export abattoirs.
Live Animal Import/Export Veterinary Officer (VO)
VO’s are responsible for providing regulatory veterinary services for the import and export of live animals and animal genetic material under the Biosecurity Act 2015 and Export Control Act 1982.
Independent Observer (IO) Veterinary Officer
The role of an Independent Observer- Veterinarian is to travel on board livestock export vessels departing from Australia to observe, monitor and report on all aspects of the management of livestock. This covers loading in the Australian port of departure to the unloading in its international port(s) of destination. The IO then disembarks in the destination port and returns to Australia via airplane.
Knowledge and experience
Knowledge of, or an interest in, public health veterinary science.
Knowledge of, or ability to quickly acquire knowledge of, the principles that underpin Australia’s biosecurity requirements.
Skills and capabilities
Effective interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate clearly and concisely with internal and external stakeholders.
The ability to work autonomously, manage a small team and interact effectively within a large organisation.
Dispute resolution and negotiation skills.
The ability to interpret and apply legislation, rules, policies, guidelines and codes of conduct.
Mandatory qualifications
To be considered for these positions you must have a degree in Veterinary Science or Veterinary Medicine and Surgery from an Australian University or equivalent veterinary qualification recognised in Australia. You must be fully registered, or eligible for full registration, with the relevant Australian state/territory veterinary board and you must maintain this registration whilst employed by the department.

The successful applicants must:
hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence
meet Department of Agriculture health and security requirements
note that they may be required to perform occasional out-of-hours and weekend work
wear an official uniform supplied by the department, including during field operations (as applicable), in accordance with the department’s uniform policy
wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.
obtain and maintain an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) and a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC).
