What you will do • Use specialist veterinary or veterinary pathology expertise to undertake and/or support field or laboratory-based animal welfare or disease surveillance, investigation and research activities using relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols or methodologies to generate valid data and achieve ongoing compliance with relevant quality standards and workplace health and safety requirements.
Plan and design routine field investigations or laboratory experiments that align with team and/or operational objectives. This includes exercising professional judgement (under indirect supervision) to: o seek relevant information from a range of sources (review of scientific and other literature);o manage any risk within the operational activities or experimental design;o define appropriate resources, materials and equipment;o identify appropriate techniques and sampling methodologies; ando determine appropriate data gathering parameters (e.g. sample type, frequency and preservation methods).
Undertake data collation, recording and retrieval using relevant information systems. Under indirect supervision, independently use appropriate quantitative and subjective methods to interpret veterinary findings for differential diagnosis of animal diseases or decisions relevant to export- or property-based accreditation schemes.
Manage own work priorities to ensure assigned tasks are undertaken effectively and efficiently to achieve operational/team aims and deliverables.
With indirect guidance and supervision: o exercise independent professional judgement based on comparison of findings with relevant scientific literature;o write technical/scientific reports, papers and recommendations for review and further input by senior veterinarians; and/oro perform technical and scientific literature reviews to collate information and contribute advice to support operational riskbased decision-making and provide guidance to external stakeholders on animal disease issues.
Positively and effectively collaborate with colleagues to actively identify and resolve problems, address veterinary challenges and deliver innovative solutions to manage biosecurity risks. Where relevant, this may include: o contributing to ongoing improvement, validation and currency of veterinary/scientific practices within work area;o developing, optimising and validating analytical methods to address emerging needs; and/oro providing initial review and feedback of peer and broader team work outputs.
Where relevant, directly liaise with external stakeholders, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships to facilitate biosecurity outcomes. This may include: o advising producers/industry stakeholders about routine veterinary issues (e.g. findings relating to endemic or exotic diseases/pests or animal welfare issues);o attending local and state forums/committees/community events to facilitate effective biosecurity risk management via provision of veterinary advice or insights; and/oro presenting veterinary findings/research at State/regional conferences with direct supervision and input from senior scientist.
